Bordering the east side of Jeffrey Road, the Jeffrey Open Space Trail is a recreation and open space corridor park that will eventually span Irvine’s entire north-south length. The trail will ultimately link up with trails leading deep into the vast preserved wildlands north and south of the city, providing connections to such places as Limestone, Round, Baker and Santiago canyons to the north, and Quail Hill, Crystal Cove State Park and Upper Newport Bay to the south.
The Jeffrey Open Space Trail meanders along Jeffrey Road through the heart of Irvine, passing through wooded areas, grassy meadows and scenic picnic spots as it connect to the city’s network of parks, paths and wildlands. It will be completed in phases, in conjunction with long-planned residential and commercial development along Jeffrey Road and in Irvine’s Northern Sphere.
The most recent section to open is adjacent to the new community of Woodbury, between Long Meadow and Irvine Boulevard. It features a large open meadow with gathering areas and plenty of room to fly a kite, ride a bike or take a leisurely walk. From this section, the trial links west to the Venta Spur at Bryan Avenue, and to the Great Park via Trabuco Road.
The trail is a key feature of the historic Open Space Initiative, which was overwhelmingly approved by residents in 1988. This agreement ensured that Irvine would have more open space than any other Orange County city. In fact, more than one-third of the entire city of Irvine – approximately 16,500 acres total – has been or will be eventually preserved as parks, trails and natural wildlands.
The trail itself is a product of extensive community input and consensus. During a series of community workshops, participants designed the centerpiece of the trail which stretches from I-5 to just past Portola Parkway.
